What is NPI Essentials?

The National Plan and Provider Enumeration system (NPPES) is the national system of unique identifiers for health care providers. This unique National Provider Identifier (NPI) is used throughout healthcare and government organizations to identify providers and is required for government health programs. NPPES is administered by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

While this data is available for querying individual providers on the NPI Registry, many individuals and organizations need to perform bulk analysis. This requires the download of 7+ Million records across multiple files. The files are too large to be opened with Excel and require a Database Management System. The bulk of the NPPES data resides in a single table with 330 columns, making even simple searches nearly impossible without an extremely environment.

NPIEssentials takes care of the Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) of NPPES data, creating a database with a simple schema and many of the most common reports users are looking for.  In addition, we:

• Automatically process monthly and weekly files the day they are made available
• Track updates to provider records and provide reports showing what changed with each dataset
• Create downloadable reports which can be opened in Excel
• Provide you with hosted database access so you can write your own queries against our live database
• Allow you to upload your own list of NPI numbers for use in queries

Why?

Sometimes you just want access to the data. No development of elaborate ETL processes and hours spent figuring out the data.

We understand that in some cases, users just want a ready-to-go downloadable database with an intuitive schema to load for their own analysis. Users with infrequent access needs can spend many hours managing servers and ETL processes unnecessarily.

Whether you just want a head start developing your own process or you want instant access to our up-to-date database for your own queries, we provide easy access for multiple use-cases.

There is also no technical support available from CMS for NPI data issues. We stay on top of updates, changes, and outages to ensure the data is always ready and available for your needs.

What's Included?

We offer a single package, providing you with multiple options for accessing and using NPI data. Whether you are looking for an optimized, full database and simple schema to import into your own server, or just want to query ours. We also include the Medicare Order and Referring dataset. This indicates if a provider can refer to Part B or Home Health Agency (HHA) and whether they can order Durable Medical Equipment (DME) or Power Mobility Devices (PMD).
